MAKING EDUCATION FOR ALL A PRIORITY MEANS AN EARLY START!

When we think of education for our kids, we take a lot for granted. The reality is that to meet the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) - that is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all - we need to be proactive and care about all of our kids. To do that, we need to give them all a great start!

The global indicator framework developed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) agreed to including Target 4.2 to directly addresses early childhood education. They did this because we know from all the research that it really does matter!

Target 4.2

By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education

Indicator 4.2.1

Proportion of children under 5 years of age who are developmentally on track in health, learning and psychosocial well-being

Making sure that we give our kids the right early start is not about sending them into glorified babysitting centres - but affording them the appropriate learning environment for early childhood education so that they can develop in all the domains. How can we make sure that this is happening? Take the time to consider what it is that we are giving up when we don't check in on our ECE providers. Ask the right questions and follow up. Check on on the progress of the children in all domains... not just cognitive. The reality is that if your baby is not feeling safe and happy, their brain is not free to explore and grow.
